This weekend we cut down the sunflowers. Everyone knows about keeping the heads for the seeds... for roasting...and to give to the birds (they love them) But did you know that you can utilize the stalks too. We cut hem into foot lengths and put them to dry. If you look at the stalks centre you will see its quite pithy... so they will make and excellent firestarter for the winter..
The sunlowers were awesome.. and they grew so fast. With the climate here...I could probably grow more in time for the Fall... but we have other plans for that now very bare looking area.
I will be growng them again next year... but next time closer together (they can take it) and Im going to plant them nearer to the veggies... as they attracted so many bees.
