Happy Monday from the Blue House. My posts have been a bit sporadic... but hopefully I will get on track this week
Today is another busy one. It started super early as MrD has to leave at 1.30 am all week. He has to be home early as we had a recall notice on the truck as there is a problem with the airbags. They are replacing them for free..and supplying us with a courtesy car until its fixed. Nice of them
The rest of the week will be doing normal things.... housework... gardening... cooking... oh... and keep talking about perhaps getting chickens...as yesterday afternoon we actually went to do some price checks... and look at some chicks that will be ready in a couple of weeks! Fingers crossed.
So here's this weeks menu selection

So good to hear you are contemplating getting chicks. I'm guessing you have researched all breeds and already have in mind what you want. We've had chickens for over 40 years. We are on acreage but here is an important tip I've learned along the way. We have an automatic feeder. It looks like a metal bucket(hangs from a chain) that the feed comes out the bottom sides. It doesn't come with a lid but my husband made a wood lid. We place a very large pan under the feeder because chickens throw their feed around with their beaks. Every few days we scoop up the feed and put it back in the feeder. Also, we have a wood floor so, if any feed is thrown over the pan, we scoop it off the floor. It probably seems a waste of time but we find it saves A LOT of money on chicken mash. Also, give the 'girls' as much room as you can but be prepared for them to turn anything green into dirt. We planted a Pakistani fruiting mulberry tree in our chicken yard. During the month of May, they produce 6 in. mulberries that are super sweet. You can google all the benifits...high in C and K, immune booster etc.. This is a messy tree but who cares if fruit drops in the chicken coop. The hens love them. My friend that lives in a tract home puts lime down in her coop. She says it stops the smell. This is the 2nd year this group of hens are laying and were getting one a day from each girl. When the hot weather starts they will slow down. We have 9 hens and will keep them until they're around 5 or 6. Just a little more food for thought.
