Cutting Back...

We got up super early to get chores done and beat the heat… 103 today

MrD worked in the gardens.. the first time he’s had the chance since we got back from Washington. 

although...someone didnt want him to

The grass and weeds have grown crazily fast.. just like the veggie garden

I had to harvest more tomatoes today.. 

and some were as big as my hand..

I think some canning is on the cards

Growth..

While we were away the veggie garden had grown crazily fast.. We only lost one plant… the strawberries in the the hanging basket.. although it’s cuttings are thriving. We must have got the water timers right.
Not the same can be said for some of our flower tubs. I’m afraid we lost quite a few to the scorching 100+ degree heat.

Still.. a satisfying return to the veggie plot

with tomatoes, 

peppers 

and chilies ripening beautifully in the heat. 

and a bit of harvesting for a lovely summer salad

The Last Day...

Its our final evening.. 

and after three dumpsters, copious amounts of trash bags and boxes to  Goodwill

I think we have done all we can do

MrDs sister will continue to take bags and boxes to Goodwill,

and on Monday a local thrift store is coming to take the big furniture

We have been to say goodbye to mum and will be leaving very early in the morning

I will miss this place and would move here in a heartbeat

We are so tired... but what a sunset

A Sting in the Tail...

Ok .. I know I shouldn’t laugh but I couldn’t help it…

So mom has given each of her three sons one of her cars. Much to MrDs delight he got the 1992 Dodge Dakota truck..

Just before this video.. he started it up and started to back out where it had been standing idly for a couple of years..

 
Suddenly his arms started flailing and he leapt from the car.. followed by quite a few angry bees/wasps who were managing to land a few stings..

He hadn’t noticed the nest just above the rear view mirror ( look closely at the video)

He’s absolutely fine .. but it was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while …

Wildlife...

 Well the dumpster arrived bright and early..as did MrDs brother JD. Between them both, Mr D and his brother had it filled within an hour. There is so much 'junk'we will need a couple more but JD will filled up his truck with junk from the house and dropped them at the dump on his way home

Even with all the work there was still time to stop now and again to watch the wildlife. 

They all seem quite comfortable and unconcerned that we were working nearby.

But...we were so lucky this morning.. when a skunk strolled across the garden.. 

Prince was still sleeping.. so we escaped the prospect of trying to bathe him in tomato juice. 

I still haven’t seen any wild turkeys.. unless you count the one squashed at the side of the road

But there’s still time before we leave on Friday

Sunflowers and Firs ....

So.. this morning we took a break from sorting and went to see mom in the home. It was quite a pleasant drive... seeing fir trees instead of palms is a lovely change.

Anyway I think we can safely say.. that the subject of her moving to California is closed. When I asked her which of her many shoes she wanted to save for her.. the canvas plimsoles.. the strappy sandals.. the dress heels, the leather shoes .. she said the only thing she wanted was her fur lined winter boots. The answer went straight over my sister in laws head as she replied ‘you won’t walk in the snow!!’ but I got it.. it rarely snows in Southern California!

She even seems to be getting used to the home..she’s had some nice meals and has decided that some of the staff are very nice. She is even getting used to having a room mate.. and just loves complaining about her. So while the search continues for another home .. she seems resigned to staying there

So after the visit we headed back to the house..passing field after field of spectacular sunflowers. A gorgeous sight indeed 

Then it was back to boxing things up as the dumpster is arriving tomorrow...and some help from Mr Ds brother.

 Oh my Gosh...

Moms house, garden and views  atr fabulous...

But there is so much Stuff!!

Every room, every cupboard. every box and three outbuildings needs sorting through

We have a list of what she wants to keep..

The rest has to be packed for Goodwill or the dumpster

Decades of stuff  equals a massive task

Its a learning curve...
