Remember..Remember.. The Fifth of November

On this day in 1605, Guy Fawkes was discovered with 36 barrels of gunpowder in a cellar under the House of Lords, part of the Houses of Parliment in London. It was a failed attempt to assassinate King James I of England and VI of Scotland... and it is now known as The Gunpowder Plot.
In Britain.. the thwarting of the Plot is commemorated every year on what is known as Bonfire Night. Fireworksare lit.. Goodies are eaten... and effigies of Guy Fawkes are burned on top of huge bonfires. When you think about it... pretty morbid...
This year... Bonfire Night coincided with the first day of Lockdown in the Uk. Not wanting my grandchildren to miss the fun... my children had to improvise.
This year was Little Mr's first real Bonfire Night... and he went to his on the 4th. His uncle was having a huge fire on his farm... after the annual pheasant shoot. At first Little Mr wasnt too sure of all the the loud explosions
But soon... he started to get used to it... especially after eating hotdogs
and by the end he was really enjoying himself

“Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli’ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England’s overthrow;
By God’s providence he was catch’d
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!”

Little Miss celebrated her Bonfire Night on the 5th.. at home with Mummy and Daddy
and watched the neighbourhood fireworks from the safety of the back garden
They had a little fire in the  a fire pit...
Plenty big enough to toast marshmallows..
and light a few sparklers...

Hopefully next year... the celebrations will be back to normal...

Chocolate Dipped Apple Slices on a Stick

So... today is also "In the Kitchen Thursday" and this weeks 'recipe' is brought to you by Little Miss in preparation for Bonfire Night. Its a variation on the annual Bonfire treat... Candy Apples. As you know... Candy Apples can be too difficult for little mouths to bite into. Cutting the apples into slices makes them much more manageable

2 very large Fuji apples
3 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 tablespoon coconut oil

  • Slice apples into 1/2" pieces and remove any pips
  • With a knife make a little slit in the bottom of each apple slice to make it easier to insert a popsicle stick.
  • Insert a popsicle stick into each piece of apple. Set aside.
  • In a medium bowl, melt chocolate chips in the microwave on high for about 2 minutes in 30 second intervals
  • Don't overheat because the chocolate will burn
  • Stir in coconut oil until smooth.
  • If the apples are extra juicy, pat down with a paper towel before dipping.
  • Dip apple slices in chocolate and place on parchment lined cookie sheet.
  • Drizzle withyour favourite treat...eg melted caramels... melted white chocolate or even ice cream topping
  • Then sprinkle with chopped nuts.. rainbow sprinkles or candy. The possibilities are endless
  • Refrigerate for about 1 hour.
  • Serve and enjoy immediately.
  • Apples are best the first day.
  • Store in refrigerator.
As you can see... this two year old chef loved making them....
and eating them...

Love and Hugs
