Thrifty Finds and Cherry Chocolate Chip Shortbread Cookies

Every week I allow myself five dollars to go "thrift" shopping... looking for second hand items, reduced goods... or anything that looks like a bargain. I dont always find something.. and the money goes into my jar. Its a good way of saving for something. ( Hopefully I will find a star for our Christmas tree this weekend...but thats another story...)
Any way... this week I was extremely lucky. An impulse visit to Goodwill produced this ever so pretty find to add to my cup and saucer collection. And it cost me an impressive $1.99.
A visit to Walmart brought me some more bargains, I know Halloween is over but it will be back in less than a year... so I got myself this little haul. Cup cake papers and a pumpkin cookie cutter for 9 cents each... two Jack a Lantern candle holders for 19 cents each... and some little hatchet cup cake toppers for 48 cents... ( I was looking at them before Halloween but wasnt going to pay $4 for them).

All my bargains for just over $3. Im a happy girl

Ive also done a bit of baking again... cookies as usual for the Chocolate Chip Monster and friends. These cookies are really festive and they went down a treat. They looked good too...so its a pity I deleted all the photos before I had a chance to post them. (its an age thing!!) But here's the recipe and the stock picture.

Cherry Chocolate Chip Shortbread Cookies

1 cup unsalted butter- room temperature
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup maraschino cherries-chopped(spread cherries on paper towel to drain well or you can use dried maraschino cherries)
2/3 cup chocolate chips

  • Mix flour and salt, set aside.
  • Cream 1 cup unsalted softened butter with 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • Mix in vanilla.
  • Add flour and salt mixture and mix until it starts forming larger clumps.
  • Mix in chocolate chips and maraschino cherries.
  • Form the dough into a log about 2 inch thick
  • Press it well or it will crumble when you slice the cookies
  • Wrap it in the plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for at least 1-2 hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 325 F and line baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Cut the log into 1/4 or 1/3 inch thick slices
  • If the slices crumbles, press it back together with your hands
  • Place them onto baking sheet with one inch of space between.
  • Bake the cookies 10– 15 minutes until they just start to turn lightly golden brown on top
  • Let them cool for 5 minutes on a baking sheet before transfer them to a rack to cool
Its been an enjoyable couple of days

  1. Thank you for the recipe. It sounds easy and good. Since I don't like cherries I'm thinking I could add dried cranberries instead.

Love your finds. Isn't it fun to find something you want for a reduced price?
